Beginner Topic 4 of 50 Software Engineering

Agile Methodology

Iterative development embracing change and feedback.

How it works

Agile is a set of values and practices, from the 2001 Agile Manifesto, that favor individuals and interactions, working software, customer collaboration and responding to change over rigid processes and documentation. Work is delivered in short iterations, with frequent feedback, continuous improvement through retrospectives and cross-functional self-organizing teams. Frameworks include Scrum, Kanban and Extreme Programming.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Work is done in short iterations of a few weeks.
  2. Each iteration delivers working software.
  3. Customers review it and give feedback.
  4. The team adapts the plan to what it learned.
  5. Individuals and responding to change are valued over rigid plans.

Where it is used

Product development, web and mobile apps and startups use agile to learn quickly and adjust priorities. Practices such as continuous integration, automated testing and small releases support it.

Common pitfall

Agile in name only, with daily meetings but no real feedback, is common. Treating it as no planning or no documentation misses the point. Large organizations struggle with dependencies and governance. Keep working software as the measure of progress, limit work in progress and adapt practices to context instead of copying a framework blindly.

Where it fits in the course

Agile Methodology is topic 4 of 50 in Software Engineering, rated Beginner. It follows Waterfall Model. The next topic is Scrum.
