Intermediate Topic 25 of 54 Programming Fundamentals
Call Stack
Memory region tracking active function calls and their local state.
How it works
The call stack is a last-in, first-out memory region where each function call pushes a frame containing arguments, local variables and the return address. Returning pops the frame and resumes the caller. The stack pointer moves with each call, so allocation is extremely fast, but the stack has a limited size, typically a few megabytes per thread.
Where it is used
The stack explains recursion limits, why local variables vanish after a function returns, how stack traces in error messages are built and how debuggers show the chain of calls. Exceptions unwind the stack frame by frame until a handler is found.
Common pitfall
Large local arrays or unbounded recursion exhaust the stack, causing a stack overflow. Returning a pointer to a local variable leaves a dangling reference. Convert deep recursion to loops, or use an explicit stack data structure on the heap.
