Intermediate Topic 22 of 50 Languages & Compilers
Compiler Phases
Frontend, optimization and backend stages.
How it works
A compiler works in a pipeline of phases. The front end performs lexical analysis, parsing and semantic analysis to check the source and build an intermediate representation; the middle end applies machine-independent optimizations such as constant folding and inlining; the back end handles instruction selection, register allocation, scheduling and emits object code. Symbol tables and error reporting are shared across phases, and linking follows. Some compilers are single-pass, but most use multiple passes over an intermediate form.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Frontend: lexing, parsing and semantic analysis build an IR.
- The optimizer improves the IR without changing meaning.
- The backend selects instructions and allocates registers.
- It emits machine code.
- Separating phases lets many languages and targets share them.
Where it is used
Understanding the pipeline helps in writing new languages, tools such as linters and transpilers, and reading compiler errors and optimization reports.
Common pitfall
Mixing concerns between phases, such as doing type checks in the parser, makes compilers hard to maintain. Optimizations that assume things the front end has not proven cause miscompilation. Poor intermediate representations limit analysis. Separate phases cleanly, test each with focused inputs and verify with end-to-end tests.
