CSS Selectors

Patterns choosing which elements a rule applies to.

How it works

Selectors choose which elements a rule applies to. Basic ones target element types, classes, IDs and attributes; combinators select descendants, children, adjacent and general siblings; pseudo-classes like :hover, :focus, :nth-child and :not match states or positions; pseudo-elements like ::before and ::after style parts of elements. Specificity ranks selectors, with IDs stronger than classes, which beat element types, and modern selectors like :is and :has add power.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. An element selector p matches all paragraphs.
  2. A class selector .card matches elements with that class.
  3. An id selector #main matches one unique element.
  4. A pseudo-class like a:hover matches a state.
  5. Combinators such as ul > li match relationships, and higher specificity wins.

Where it is used

Styling components, form states, lists and generated content use selectors, and JavaScript uses the same syntax in querySelector.

Common pitfall

Overly long chains such as nested descendants are brittle and slow to override. Using IDs for styling creates high specificity. Misunderstanding combinators, for example space versus the child combinator, selects the wrong elements. Prefer single class selectors, keep specificity low and use DevTools to see which rule wins.
