Intermediate Topic 30 of 51 Concurrency & Parallelism
Data Parallelism
Applying the same operation across partitions of data.
How it works
Data parallelism applies the same operation to different pieces of data simultaneously, splitting a large dataset across processing elements, cores, vector lanes or GPU threads. Typical patterns are parallel loops, map operations and reductions, and SIMD vector instructions. It scales with data size, has regular structure and is easy to reason about because tasks are independent. Frameworks include OpenMP parallel for, Java parallel streams, NumPy vectorization, MapReduce and GPU programming.
Where it is used
Image and video processing, matrix operations, scientific simulation, machine-learning training and batch analytics are data-parallel.
Common pitfall
Loop-carried dependencies prevent parallelization. Load imbalance occurs if work per element varies. Memory bandwidth, not computation, often limits speedup. False sharing and synchronization overhead reduce gains for small workloads. Choose chunk sizes carefully, avoid shared writes, use thread-local accumulators and reduce at the end, and check that the work per element outweighs parallel overhead.
