Advanced Topic 49 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

DevSecOps

Integrating security throughout the delivery pipeline.

How it works

DevSecOps builds security into every stage of the delivery pipeline instead of reviewing it at the end, an approach often called shift left. Typical checks include static analysis (SAST) in the editor and CI, dependency and license scanning (SCA), secret detection, container image scanning, infrastructure-as-code checks, dynamic testing (DAST) against running staging systems and runtime monitoring in production. Threat modeling happens at design time, signed artifacts and software bills of materials (SBOMs) secure the supply chain and security findings are triaged like other bugs. Shared responsibility replaces a separate gatekeeper team.

Where it is used

Teams use it to catch vulnerabilities early when they are cheapest to fix and to prove compliance with automated evidence.

Common pitfall

Piling on noisy scanners produces alert fatigue, blocking every build on low-severity findings frustrates developers and tools without ownership go unread. Tune rules, prioritize by exploitability and make secure defaults easy.

Where it fits in the course

DevSecOps is topic 49 of 50 in DevOps & Tooling, rated Advanced. It follows Disaster Recovery. The next topic is Developer Productivity.
