Feature Engineering
Crafting inputs that make learning easier.
How it works
Feature engineering is the process of transforming raw data into inputs that help models learn. Techniques include scaling and normalization, encoding categorical variables with one-hot, ordinal or target encoding, handling missing values, creating interaction and polynomial terms, binning, log transforms, extracting date parts, aggregating events per user, text vectorization such as TF-IDF and domain-specific signals. Good features encode knowledge about the problem and often matter more than the choice of algorithm.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Raw data is rarely ready for a model.
- Fix missing values and encode categories.
- Create new features, such as day of week or ratio of two columns.
- Scale and select useful ones.
- Good features often beat fancier algorithms.
Where it is used
Tabular machine learning in finance, retail and operations relies heavily on features. Feature stores manage consistent definitions for training and serving.
Common pitfall
Using information not available at prediction time creates leakage. Target encoding without cross-fitting overfits. Features computed differently in training and production cause training-serving skew. Too many noisy features hurt. Deep learning reduces manual feature work for images and text but not for all data. Document features, test pipelines and validate with proper time-aware splits.
