Beginner Topic 11 of 51 Theory & Discrete Math

Graph Theory Basics

Vertices, edges, degrees and paths.

How it works

Graph theory studies vertices connected by edges. Basic concepts include directed and undirected graphs, degree, paths, cycles, connectivity, components, simple versus multigraphs, complete and bipartite graphs, subgraphs and isomorphism. The handshake lemma says the sum of degrees equals twice the number of edges. Representations include adjacency lists and matrices, and many algorithms build on traversal.

Where it is used

Modeling networks, maps, social relations, dependencies, scheduling conflicts, circuits and molecules, and algorithms for shortest paths, flow and matching, rely on graph theory.

Common pitfall

Terminology varies between authors, such as whether paths may repeat vertices. Confusing degree in directed graphs, in-degree versus out-degree, or treating a drawing as the graph itself causes mistakes: different drawings may be the same graph. Verify definitions before applying theorems, and test claims on small examples.

Where it fits in the course
