GraphQL
Query language letting clients request exactly the data they need.
How it works
GraphQL is a query language and runtime for APIs in which clients ask for exactly the fields they need in a single request, described by a strongly typed schema. Queries read data, mutations change it and subscriptions stream updates. A server resolves each field with resolver functions, and a single endpoint serves all operations. Introspection lets tools and editors discover the schema.
Where it is used
Mobile and front-end applications with varied data needs, aggregating several back-end services behind one API and rapidly evolving products use GraphQL to avoid over-fetching and many round trips.
Common pitfall
Naive resolvers create the N+1 query problem unless batched with tools like DataLoader. Arbitrary client queries can be expensive or abusive, so use depth and cost limits and persisted queries. HTTP caching is harder than with REST. Authorization must be applied per field. Evolve the schema by deprecating fields instead of versioning.
