Beginner Topic 14 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

grep, sed and awk

Classic text-processing tools.

How it works

These three classic tools process text line by line. grep searches for lines matching a pattern or regular expression, with options such as -i, -v, -r and -n. sed is a stream editor, most often used for substitution like sed 's/old/new/g' and for deleting or printing line ranges, with -i editing a file in place. awk treats each line as fields, so awk '{print $1, $3}' selects columns, and it supports conditions, variables, arithmetic and summaries across lines. They are combined with pipes and regular expressions.

Where it is used

Engineers use them to search logs, bulk-edit configuration, extract columns from reports and compute counts and totals without writing a full program.

Common pitfall

Regular expression syntax differs between basic and extended modes, and sed -i behaves differently on macOS and Linux. Complex parsing of structured formats such as JSON or CSV is better done with jq, a CSV tool or a real language.

Where it fits in the course
