Huffman Coding
Optimal prefix codes built from symbol frequencies.
How it works
Huffman coding builds an optimal prefix code for lossless compression by greedily merging the two least frequent symbols using a min-heap until a single tree remains. Frequent symbols get short bit strings and rare ones get long ones, and no code is a prefix of another so decoding is unambiguous. The resulting code length is within one bit per symbol of the entropy.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Count how often each symbol appears.
- Repeatedly join the two least frequent symbols under a new node.
- Continue until a single tree remains.
- Left edges are 0 and right edges are 1, so frequent symbols get short codes.
- No code is a prefix of another so decoding is unambiguous.
Where it is used
File compression like DEFLATE in ZIP and gzip, JPEG and MP3 entropy coding, and fax encoding use Huffman coding. The decoder needs the tree or code lengths, which are stored in the header.
Common pitfall
It needs symbol frequencies up front, so two passes or adaptive versions are needed. For skewed distributions arithmetic coding compresses better. Ties during merging can produce different but equally optimal trees; agree on a canonical form so encoder and decoder match. A single-symbol input needs a special case.
