Beginner Topic 6 of 54 Programming Fundamentals
Input and Output
Reading data from users or files and displaying results.
How it works
Programs read data from standard input, files, sockets, devices or UI events and write results to standard output, files, networks or screens. Streams abstract these sources into a uniform sequence of bytes or characters, so the same code can read from a keyboard, a file or a network connection. Operating systems provide the underlying system calls, and libraries add buffering to reduce expensive calls.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Input arrives from the keyboard, a file or the network.
- The program reads it into a variable.
- It processes the value, for example validating or converting it.
- Results are written to the screen or to a file.
- Streams are buffered, so output may appear only after a flush.
Where it is used
Command-line tools, logging, reading CSV or JSON data, prompting a user for a number and writing reports to disk are everyday uses. Redirection and pipes let small programs be chained together in shell scripts.
Common pitfall
Input is untrusted: always validate it and handle empty, oversized or malformed values. Forgetting to flush buffered output can hide messages or lose data on a crash. Mixing text and binary modes, ignoring character encodings and blocking forever on a read that never completes are common errors.
