Integration Testing

Checking that components work together.

How it works

Integration testing verifies that several components, such as modules, services, databases and external APIs, work correctly together. It finds interface mismatches, configuration errors, serialization problems and data-flow bugs that unit tests miss. Approaches include big bang, top-down, bottom-up and sandwich integration. Tests often run against real databases in containers, or use contract tests and test doubles for third-party services.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Unit tests alone cannot prove parts fit together.
  2. An integration test runs real components.
  3. It checks that service A reads and writes the database correctly.
  4. It checks the call from A to B and its response.
  5. It catches interface and configuration bugs, though it runs slower.

Where it is used

Testing API endpoints against a database, message-queue consumers, authentication flows and microservice interactions use integration tests, usually in CI pipelines.

Common pitfall

They are slower and more brittle than unit tests, and failures are harder to localize. Shared test environments and data lead to flaky results; isolate and reset state. Over-reliance on end-to-end tests creates slow suites. Follow a test pyramid with many unit tests, fewer integration tests and a few end-to-end tests, and keep environments reproducible.

Where it fits in the course
