Matrices in Graphics

Using matrices to combine transformations.

How it works

Matrices represent linear transformations and, in homogeneous coordinates, affine and projective transformations, in a compact way that hardware applies to many vertices. In 3D, 4 by 4 matrices handle translation, rotation, scale and projection. Typical pipelines multiply by model, view and projection matrices, and normals are transformed by the inverse transpose of the model matrix. Matrix multiplication combines transformations, the inverse undoes them and decompositions extract position, rotation and scale. Quaternions complement matrices for rotation.

Where it is used

Every 3D graphics engine, shader and animation system uses matrices, supported by libraries such as GLM and glMatrix.

Common pitfall

Row-major versus column-major storage and pre- versus post-multiplication conventions differ among APIs, producing transposed or reversed results. Order of operations errors flip the effect. Accumulated floating-point errors in repeated multiplication cause drift, so re-orthonormalize rotations. Non-invertible matrices have no inverse. Keep conventions documented and test with simple known transforms.
