Beginner Topic 14 of 51 Math for Computing
Mean, Median and Mode
Common measures of central tendency.
How it works
The mean is the arithmetic average, the sum of values divided by their count; the median is the middle value when sorted, or the average of the two middle ones, splitting the data in half; and the mode is the most frequent value. They describe the center of data in different ways: the mean uses all values and is sensitive to outliers, the median is robust and the mode suits categorical data. In skewed distributions, the mean is pulled toward the tail, so mean, median and mode differ.
Where it is used
Summarizing data in reports, income and house prices where medians are used, response times with percentiles, grading and statistics in data analysis use these measures.
Common pitfall
Using the mean for skewed data such as incomes gives a misleading sense of typical values. Averages of averages are wrong when group sizes differ, so weight them. Multiple modes or none can exist. Median needs sorting or selection algorithms. Choose the measure that fits the distribution and report spread alongside it.
