Mesh Simplification

Reducing polygon counts while keeping shape.

How it works

Mesh simplification reduces the number of triangles in a model while preserving its overall shape and appearance. Common algorithms include edge collapse driven by quadric error metrics, which merge vertices while minimizing geometric error, vertex clustering and decimation, and they can preserve boundaries, UV seams and attributes. The results provide levels of detail, LODs, so distant objects use fewer triangles, and progressive meshes allow continuous refinement.

Where it is used

Game engines, real-time visualization, web 3D, scanning pipelines and 3D printing preparation use simplification to meet performance and memory budgets.

Common pitfall

Aggressive reduction destroys silhouettes, thin features and texture mapping, causing visible popping when switching LODs. Not preserving UVs, normals and skinning weights causes artifacts. Simplifying meshes with animation needs care near joints. Evaluate with visual comparison and error metrics, author LODs for important assets manually or semi-automatically and blend transitions.

Where it fits in the course
