Monolith vs Microservices

Trade-offs between single-deployable and service-based systems.

How it works

A monolith deploys the whole application as a single unit with shared code and usually one database, while microservices split it into independently deployable services. Monoliths are simpler to develop, test, deploy and debug and have fast in-process calls, but can become tangled and hard to scale or release in parts as they grow. Microservices give independent scaling and deployment at the cost of distributed-system complexity. A modular monolith is a middle path with strong internal boundaries.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. A monolith is deployed as one unit.
  2. It is simple to build, test and debug at first.
  3. Microservices split it into independent services.
  4. They let teams deploy and scale separately.
  5. Choose by team size and need, not fashion.

Where it is used

Startups and small teams usually start with a monolith, and large systems migrate portions to services as organizational and scaling needs grow.

Common pitfall

Premature microservices create overhead before the domain is understood, and bad splits are expensive to correct. A neglected monolith without module boundaries is hard to evolve. Decide based on team structure, deployment frequency and scaling needs, extract services gradually with the strangler pattern and keep boundaries clean either way.
