Observer Pattern
Notifying dependents automatically when state changes.
How it works
The observer pattern defines a one-to-many dependency in which a subject keeps a list of observers and notifies them automatically when its state changes. Observers register and unregister themselves, and the subject calls an update method or event callback on each. It decouples the source of an event from the code that reacts to it. Variants include publish-subscribe with a broker, event emitters and reactive streams.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Observers register with the subject.
- Two more observers subscribe.
- The subject's state changes.
- It notifies every observer automatically.
- Others update too, and this is how event listeners and reactive UIs work.
Where it is used
GUI event handling, model-view updates, event buses, notifications, reactive libraries such as RxJS and spreadsheets recalculating dependent cells use the observer idea.
Common pitfall
Forgetting to unsubscribe causes memory leaks, since the subject holds references. Update cascades and cycles can cause loops or hard-to-trace behavior. Notification order is often unspecified. Exceptions in one observer can affect others, and threading adds races. Keep handlers small, remove listeners when done and avoid modifying the subscriber list during notification.
