Beginner Topic 3 of 54 Programming Fundamentals
Operators
Symbols that perform arithmetic, comparison or logical computation on operands.
How it works
Operators combine operands into new values. The main families are arithmetic (+ - * / %), comparison (== != < >), logical (and, or, not) and bitwise (& | ^ << >>). Each operator has a precedence and associativity that decide evaluation order in expressions such as a + b * c, and parentheses override both. Some languages also support operator overloading so that + can mean string concatenation or vector addition.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Operands a and b are plain values.
- Multiplication binds tighter than addition, so a * b runs first.
- Then the product 24 is combined with 2 by the plus operator.
- Parentheses would override the precedence order.
Where it is used
Operators appear in every expression, from computing averages and discounts to testing x % 2 == 0 for evenness, masking bits in flags or combining conditions with and/or. Short-circuit evaluation of logical operators is widely used to guard against null values, as in p != null and p.value > 0.
Common pitfall
Confusing = (assignment) with == (comparison) is a classic slip. Integer division gives surprising results, such as 7 / 2 equal to 3 in C and Java. Relying on remembered precedence instead of parentheses leads to wrong answers, and mixing bitwise and logical operators produces bugs that compile cleanly.
