OWASP Top Ten

Catalog of the most critical web application risks.

How it works

The OWASP Top Ten is a regularly updated awareness list of the most critical web application security risks, produced by the Open Worldwide Application Security Project. Recent editions include broken access control, cryptographic failures, injection, insecure design, security misconfiguration, vulnerable and outdated components, identification and authentication failures, software and data integrity failures, security logging and monitoring failures and server-side request forgery. Each entry explains the risk, examples and prevention.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. OWASP lists the most critical web risks.
  2. Broken access control tops the list.
  3. Weak or missing encryption exposes data.
  4. Injection includes SQL and command injection.
  5. Insecure design needs threat modeling early, and the list is a checklist for audits.

Where it is used

Developers, testers, auditors and compliance programs use it as a baseline for training, code review checklists and security testing coverage.

Common pitfall

It is a starting point, not a complete standard; many risks fall outside the list. Treating it as a checklist to tick off leads to superficial security. Priorities change with each edition and context. Use it together with the OWASP ASVS verification standard and cheat sheets, and tailor testing to the application's threats.

Where it fits in the course

OWASP Top Ten is topic 34 of 51 in Security & Cryptography, rated Intermediate. It follows Secure Coding. The next topic is Elliptic Curve Cryptography.
