Raster vs Vector Graphics

Pixel grids versus mathematically defined shapes.

How it works

Raster graphics store images as a grid of pixels, so detail is limited by resolution and scaling up causes blur; formats include JPEG, PNG and WebP. Vector graphics describe shapes mathematically as paths, curves, fills and strokes, so they scale to any size without losing sharpness and have small file sizes for simple art; formats include SVG, PDF and EPS. Photographs and complex textures suit raster images, while logos, icons, diagrams and typography suit vectors. Rendering vectors converts them to pixels at display time.

Where it is used

Websites use SVG for icons and charts and raster formats for photos, designers use Illustrator and Figma for vectors and Photoshop for raster work, and fonts are vector outlines.

Common pitfall

Detailed photos converted to vector become huge and look artificial. Raster images used at large sizes look pixelated, so provide multiple resolutions. Complex SVGs with thousands of paths render slowly. Text in vector files may depend on missing fonts unless converted to outlines. Pick the type by content and target sizes.
