Rendering Pipeline

Stages transforming geometry into pixels.

How it works

The graphics rendering pipeline converts a 3D scene into a 2D image through stages. The application submits geometry; the vertex shader transforms vertices into clip space; primitive assembly forms triangles, followed by clipping and the perspective divide; rasterization converts triangles into fragments; the fragment shader computes color using textures and lighting; and the output merger performs depth testing, blending and writes to the framebuffer. Tessellation, geometry and compute stages are optional, and modern APIs are Vulkan, Direct3D 12, Metal and OpenGL.

Where it is used

Real-time games, simulations, CAD and interface compositors use GPU pipelines. Understanding stages helps optimize draw calls, bandwidth and shaders.

Common pitfall

Bottlenecks shift between the CPU, vertex processing, fill rate and memory bandwidth, so profile first. State changes and too many draw calls hurt performance. Transparency requires sorting or special techniques. Overdraw wastes fragment work. Learn to inspect frames with tools such as RenderDoc, and batch and instance objects.

Where it fits in the course
