Advanced Topic 38 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Secrets Management

Storing credentials securely for applications.

How it works

Secrets such as passwords, API keys, tokens and certificates must be stored and delivered securely. Dedicated systems such as HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager and Kubernetes secrets with an external store keep them encrypted, control access with identities and policies, record an audit log and support rotation. Applications fetch secrets at runtime or have them injected, and dynamic secrets issue short-lived credentials generated on demand. Tools such as git-secrets and pre-commit scanners prevent commits of credentials, and encrypted files such as SOPS allow secrets to live in Git safely.

Where it is used

Teams use it to give services database passwords and cloud keys without hard-coding them, and to revoke or rotate access quickly after a leak.

Common pitfall

Secrets in source code, container layers, logs or chat are the most common cause of breaches, and long-lived shared keys are hard to rotate. Use short-lived credentials, least privilege and automatic rotation.

Where it fits in the course

Secrets Management is topic 38 of 50 in DevOps & Tooling, rated Advanced. It follows Cost Optimization. The next topic is GitOps.
