Intermediate Topic 21 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Serial Communication
UART, SPI and I2C links between chips.
How it works
Serial communication sends data one bit at a time over a few wires. UART is an asynchronous, point-to-point link using TX and RX lines with agreed baud rate, data bits, parity and stop bits and no shared clock. SPI is a fast synchronous bus with clock, MOSI, MISO and chip-select lines for one controller and several peripherals. I2C uses two shared lines, SDA and SCL, with device addresses and pull-up resistors, supporting many devices at moderate speed. Others include CAN for vehicles, RS-485 for long industrial runs and USB.
Where it is used
Connecting sensors, displays, memory chips, GPS modules, radios, debug consoles and other microcontrollers use these protocols.
Common pitfall
Mismatched baud rates or settings produce garbage characters. I2C needs proper pull-ups and unique addresses, and long wires limit speed. SPI modes, clock polarity and phase, must match the device. Shared grounds and voltage levels must be compatible. Logic analyzers are invaluable for debugging. Use buffering and framing with checksums for reliable messages.
