Advanced Topic 42 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Serverless Computing

Running functions without managing servers.

How it works

Serverless computing lets developers run code without managing servers: the platform provisions, scales and bills by actual execution. Functions as a service such as AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions and Azure Functions run event-triggered functions that scale from zero to thousands of instances, while managed services such as queues, databases and API gateways complete the architecture. Billing is per invocation and duration, with limits on execution time, memory and package size.

Where it is used

Web APIs, event processing, image and file processing, scheduled tasks, glue between cloud services and spiky workloads with idle periods use serverless.

Common pitfall

Cold starts add latency on first calls after idle periods, and execution limits make long-running or stateful workloads awkward. Vendor lock-in, difficult local testing and debugging, unpredictable cost at high steady load and connection limits to databases are common concerns. Keep functions small and idempotent, reuse connections, set concurrency limits and monitor cost.

Where it fits in the course

Serverless Computing is topic 42 of 51 in Distributed Systems & Cloud, rated Advanced. It follows Kubernetes. The next topic is Infrastructure as Code.

How to study this topic

  1. Read the explanation above and restate the definition in your own words.
  2. Open the interactive lesson and answer its mini quiz.
  3. Read the common pitfall, then write a short example that avoids it.
  4. Check your understanding in the Distributed Systems & Cloud quiz, and revisit the topic if you miss a question.

Frequently asked questions

What is Serverless Computing?
Running functions without managing servers. It belongs to Distributed Systems & Cloud and is an advanced-level topic.
Where do people use Serverless Computing?
Web APIs, event processing, image and file processing, scheduled tasks, glue between cloud services and spiky workloads with idle periods use serverless.
What is the most common mistake with Serverless Computing?
Cold starts add latency on first calls after idle periods, and execution limits make long-running or stateful workloads awkward.
What should I learn before this topic?
Start with Kubernetes, the topic just before it in Distributed Systems & Cloud.
How can I practice it?
Answer the mini quiz in the interactive lesson, then take the Distributed Systems & Cloud quiz.
Is Serverless Computing hard to learn?
It is an Advanced topic. Expect to read the explanation more than once and to connect it with earlier topics. Working through a small example by hand helps most.
How long does it take to learn Serverless Computing?
Most learners can read the explanation and finish the interactive lesson in under an hour. Fluency comes from applying the idea, so plan a few short practice sessions with the quiz.
