Sprites and Tilemaps
2D images and grid-based level layouts.
How it works
A sprite is a 2D image or animation frame drawn as an object in a scene, often stored in a sprite sheet atlas that packs many frames into one texture to reduce draw calls. A tilemap builds large levels from a grid of small reusable tiles, storing only tile indexes rather than full images, which saves memory and makes editing easy. Layers allow backgrounds, foregrounds and collision data, and autotiling picks edge variants automatically. Tools such as Tiled export maps for engines.
Where it is used
2D games such as platformers and role-playing games, level editors, retro-style games and map-based interfaces use sprites and tilemaps.
Common pitfall
Texture bleeding and seams at tile edges happen with filtering and fractional positions, so use padding or nearest-neighbor sampling for pixel art. Non-integer scaling blurs pixel art. Too many separate textures slow rendering, so batch with atlases. Sorting sprites for depth needs care. Keep tile sizes consistent and separate visual layers from collision logic.
