Static Single Assignment
IR where each variable is assigned exactly once.
How it works
Static single assignment form is an intermediate representation in which every variable is assigned exactly once, with new versions such as x1 and x2 created for each assignment. Where control flow paths merge, special phi functions select the value depending on which path was taken. This makes def-use relationships explicit, simplifying many optimizations such as constant propagation, dead code elimination, value numbering and register allocation. Algorithms based on dominance frontiers construct it efficiently.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- In SSA each variable is assigned exactly once.
- Reassigned variables get new names x1 and x2.
- At a join point a phi function picks the right version.
- Later code uses x3.
- SSA makes optimizations like constant propagation simpler.
Where it is used
LLVM, GCC, the JVM's HotSpot compiler, V8's TurboFan and many other optimizing compilers use SSA as their central IR.
Common pitfall
Phi nodes complicate code generation: they must be eliminated before register allocation by inserting copies, which can cause lost-copy and swap problems. Memory operations are not in SSA unless modeled specially. Transformations must preserve the single-assignment invariant. Understanding dominators and the control flow graph is essential.
