Advanced Topic 50 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

System Design Case Studies

Designing large systems like feeds, chat and URL shorteners.

How it works

System design case studies walk through designing real-world systems end to end, such as a URL shortener, news feed, chat application, video streaming service, ride-sharing platform, web crawler, rate limiter or distributed cache. A good approach clarifies requirements and scale, estimates traffic and storage, proposes a high-level architecture, details data models, APIs and key components, then discusses bottlenecks, trade-offs in consistency, availability and cost, and evolution. Common building blocks include load balancers, caches, queues, sharded databases, CDNs and replication.

Where it is used

Engineers use case studies to learn patterns and prepare for interviews, and architects use similar reasoning for real design reviews.

Common pitfall

Jumping to technologies before requirements and numbers leads to unfit designs. Memorized designs do not replace understanding trade-offs, and over-engineering for imaginary scale is common. Ignoring failure handling, data growth and operational concerns leaves gaps. Practice back-of-the-envelope calculations, justify each choice with requirements and state assumptions explicitly.

Where it fits in the course
