Beginner Topic 5 of 50 Computer Networks
TCP/IP Model
Four-layer practical protocol suite of the Internet.
How it works
The TCP/IP model is the practical architecture of the internet, with four layers: link, internet, transport and application. The internet layer uses IP to address and route packets, the transport layer uses TCP for reliable streams or UDP for datagrams, and the application layer includes protocols like HTTP, DNS and SMTP. Each layer encapsulates data from the one above, and layers can evolve independently.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- The Internet uses four practical layers.
- The application creates the message.
- TCP splits it into segments with port numbers.
- IP wraps each segment in a packet with source and destination addresses.
- The link layer carries frames over one hop at a time.
Where it is used
Every device on the internet implements it. Sockets APIs expose the transport layer, and network tools such as ping, traceroute and packet captures map to its layers.
Common pitfall
The model hides lower-layer details, but performance and reliability still depend on them, such as MTU limits and packet loss. Mixing OSI terminology with TCP/IP leads to confusion over where a protocol sits. IP offers only best-effort delivery, so reliability must come from TCP or the application. Learn encapsulation by capturing real packets in Wireshark.
