Beginner Topic 3 of 51 Algorithms

Time Complexity

How running time grows with input size.

How it works

Time complexity counts the basic operations an algorithm performs as a function of the input size n, ignoring constants and machine details. We compare growth rates such as log n, n, n log n and n squared, and distinguish best, average and worst cases. It predicts how running time grows when the input doubles, which matters more than speed on tiny inputs.

Where it is used

Choosing which algorithm will scale to a million or a billion items, estimating whether a solution fits a time limit, comparing data structures and spotting accidental quadratic loops use time complexity.

Common pitfall

Counting wall-clock time instead of growth, and ignoring best, average and worst cases, mislead decisions. Hidden costs inside library calls, such as string concatenation or list membership tests, change the true complexity. Big constants can make an asymptotically better algorithm slower for small n.

Where it fits in the course

Time Complexity is topic 3 of 51 in Algorithms, rated Beginner. It follows Pseudocode. The next topic is Space Complexity.
