Beginner Topic 8 of 50 Software Engineering
UML Diagrams
Standard notation for modeling software structure and behavior.
How it works
The Unified Modeling Language is a standard visual notation for describing software. Structural diagrams include class, object, component and deployment diagrams; behavioral diagrams include use case, sequence, activity, state machine and communication diagrams. Class diagrams show classes, attributes, methods and relationships such as inheritance, association, aggregation and composition, and sequence diagrams show message flow over time.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- UML is a shared notation for modeling software.
- Class diagrams show types and relationships.
- Sequence diagrams show messages over time.
- Use case diagrams show what actors can do.
- State diagrams show an object's lifecycle.
Where it is used
Teams use UML to design, discuss, document and communicate architecture and behavior, often sketched on whiteboards or generated from code with tools like PlantUML and Mermaid.
Common pitfall
Excessive detail turns diagrams into stale documentation that nobody maintains. Drawing everything wastes time; model only what helps understanding. Notation errors confuse readers, such as mixing up aggregation and composition arrows. Keep diagrams focused, state their purpose and update them when the design changes, or generate them from code.
