Advanced Topic 46 of 52 Data Structures

Van Emde Boas Trees

Structures supporting integer set operations in log-log time.

How it works

A van Emde Boas tree stores integers from a universe of size U and supports insert, delete, successor, predecessor, minimum and maximum in O(log log U) time. It recursively splits the universe into sqrt(U) clusters with a summary structure, storing the minimum separately so that only one recursive call is needed per operation.

Where it is used

Fast integer priority queues, router lookups, theoretical results on integer sorting and academic study of data structure lower bounds use vEB trees.

Common pitfall

They need O(U) space unless made sparse with hashing, which is prohibitive for large universes. Implementation is complex, with the lazy minimum and maximum special cases causing errors. Constants are large, so in practice balanced trees or bitwise structures beat them except for very large workloads on bounded integers.

Where it fits in the course

Van Emde Boas Trees is topic 46 of 52 in Data Structures, rated Advanced. It follows Fibonacci Heaps. The next topic is Cuckoo Hashing.
