Wi-Fi
Wireless LAN technology based on IEEE 802.11.
How it works
Wi-Fi is a family of wireless LAN standards from IEEE 802.11, including 802.11n, ac, ax (Wi-Fi 6) and be (Wi-Fi 7), operating in the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands. Devices connect to access points identified by an SSID and share the medium using CSMA/CA, since they cannot detect collisions while transmitting. Modulation, channel width and MIMO determine speed, and WPA2 and WPA3 provide encryption.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- The laptop scans for the network name SSID.
- It authenticates with WPA2 or WPA3 and associates.
- Data frames travel over radio.
- The access point forwards them to the wired network.
- CSMA/CA makes devices listen before sending to limit collisions.
Where it is used
Homes, offices, public hotspots and campuses use Wi-Fi. Mesh systems extend coverage, and roaming lets devices move between access points.
Common pitfall
Interference from neighbors, microwaves and walls cuts throughput, and shared airtime means many devices slow each other. 2.4 GHz is crowded but has longer range. Weak or old security such as WEP or open networks exposes traffic. Choose channels carefully, position access points well and prefer wired links for stationary heavy users.
