AI Ethics and Fairness

Addressing bias, transparency and societal impact.

How it works

AI ethics addresses the societal impact of AI systems, including fairness and bias, transparency and explainability, privacy, accountability, safety, robustness, misuse and environmental cost. Bias arises from unrepresentative data, historical discrimination encoded in labels, proxy features and feedback loops. Fairness has several mathematical definitions, such as demographic parity, equalized odds and calibration, which can conflict with one another. Approaches include dataset audits, bias metrics, mitigation methods, model cards, documentation, impact assessments and human oversight, and regulation such as the EU AI Act.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Models learn from data that may reflect past bias.
  2. They can then treat groups unfairly.
  3. Audit performance across groups.
  4. Fixes: better data, fairness constraints and human oversight.
  5. Explanations and accountability build trust.

Where it is used

Hiring tools, credit scoring, criminal justice risk assessment, face recognition, healthcare triage and content moderation require ethical review.

Common pitfall

Fairness cannot be reduced to one metric, and fixing bias in a model does not fix a biased process. Removing sensitive attributes does not remove bias because of proxies. Lack of diversity in teams and data leads to blind spots. Involve affected stakeholders, test across subgroups, document limitations and monitor outcomes after deployment.

Where it fits in the course
