Bug Tracking
Recording and managing defects through resolution.
How it works
Bug tracking records, prioritizes and follows defects from discovery to resolution in a system such as Jira, GitHub Issues or Bugzilla. A good report states the observed and expected behavior, exact steps to reproduce, environment and version, logs or screenshots, and severity and priority. Issues move through a workflow such as new, triaged, in progress, fixed, verified and closed, and link to commits and releases.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- A user or tester reports a defect with steps to reproduce.
- The team triages severity and priority.
- A developer fixes it.
- The fix is verified and the ticket resolved.
- Regression tests stop it returning.
Where it is used
Development and support teams use trackers to coordinate fixes, measure quality trends, plan releases and avoid losing user reports.
Common pitfall
Poor reports without reproduction steps waste time. Duplicates, stale tickets and unclear ownership create noise, so triage regularly. Mixing severity, how bad it is, with priority, how soon to fix, causes disputes. Add regression tests when fixing, link the fix to the issue and communicate status to reporters.
