Advanced Topic 40 of 54 Programming Fundamentals

Classes and Objects

Blueprints and their runtime instances.

How it works

A class defines the fields and methods that its instances share; instantiating it with a constructor creates an object with its own state. Methods operate on the object through this or self, and static members belong to the class itself. Object creation allocates memory, runs the constructor to establish a valid initial state and returns a reference.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. The class is the blueprint with fields and methods.
  2. The constructor builds an instance.
  3. The first object holds color = red.
  4. Another call makes a second independent object.
  5. Changing car1 does not affect car2.

Where it is used

A BankAccount class holding a balance and exposing deposit() and withdraw(), a User class in a web application and a Vector class in a graphics library are typical examples. Classes give related data and behavior a single home.

Common pitfall

Mixing unrelated responsibilities in one class and exposing mutable internals make code brittle. Constructors that leave objects half-initialized cause null errors later. Keep classes focused, validate in the constructor, and avoid sharing mutable class-level state accidentally.

Where it fits in the course

Classes and Objects is topic 40 of 54 in Programming Fundamentals, rated Advanced. It follows Object-Oriented Programming. The next topic is Encapsulation.
