Intermediate Topic 25 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Kubernetes Objects

Pods, deployments and services.

How it works

Kubernetes manages containers across a cluster through declarative objects described in YAML. A Pod is the smallest unit, one or more containers sharing a network and storage. A Deployment keeps a set number of identical Pod replicas and manages rolling updates, a Service gives Pods a stable address and load balances, and an Ingress routes external HTTP traffic. ConfigMaps and Secrets inject configuration, PersistentVolumes provide storage, and namespaces separate teams. Controllers continually compare the desired state with the actual state and correct differences.

Where it is used

Teams use these objects to run scalable, self-healing services with automated rollouts, autoscaling and service discovery.

Common pitfall

Missing resource requests and limits let one Pod starve others, Pods are ephemeral so local data is lost, and Secrets are only base64 encoded by default. Define probes, set resource limits and apply RBAC and encryption at rest.

Where it fits in the course

Kubernetes Objects is topic 25 of 50 in DevOps & Tooling, rated Intermediate. It follows Docker Compose. The next topic is Helm and Kustomize.
