Beginner Topic 10 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Cloud Computing

On-demand computing resources over the Internet.

How it works

Cloud computing delivers computing resources, servers, storage, databases, networking and software, over the internet on demand with pay-as-you-go pricing. Characteristics defined by NIST include on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity and measured service. Deployment models are public, private, hybrid and multi-cloud, and providers such as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud run global data centers in regions and availability zones.

Where it is used

Startups launch products without buying hardware, enterprises migrate workloads, data teams run analytics and machine learning, and websites use CDNs and managed services.

Common pitfall

Costs can balloon without monitoring, resources left running and data transfer fees. Misconfigured storage buckets and permissions cause breaches under the shared responsibility model. Vendor lock-in and outages of a region affect availability. Use infrastructure as code, tagging and budgets, apply least privilege, design for multi-zone resilience and understand what the provider secures versus what you must.

Where it fits in the course

Cloud Computing is topic 10 of 51 in Distributed Systems & Cloud, rated Beginner. It follows Message Queues. The next topic is IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.
