Beginner Topic 12 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Virtual Machines in Cloud

Rentable emulated servers.

How it works

Cloud providers run customers' virtual machines on shared physical servers using hypervisors. A customer picks an instance type with CPU, memory, storage and network characteristics, an image, a region and zone, and pays per second or hour. Features include snapshots, auto scaling groups, live migration, spot or preemptible instances at a discount, dedicated hosts and GPU instances. Block storage volumes attach to instances and network security groups control traffic.

Where it is used

Hosting web servers, databases, batch computing, development environments, legacy applications and workloads needing full OS control use cloud VMs.

Common pitfall

Instances are ephemeral, so local disks are lost on termination, and spot instances can be reclaimed on short notice. Over-provisioned VMs waste money, while noisy neighbors affect performance. Unpatched images and open ports are security risks. Automate builds with images and configuration management, use right-sizing and monitoring, spread across zones and treat servers as replaceable.
