Convex Optimization

Optimizing convex functions with guaranteed global optima.

How it works

Convex optimization minimizes a convex function over a convex set, where any line segment between two feasible points stays inside the set, and the function lies below chords. Its key property is that every local minimum is a global minimum, so efficient algorithms with guarantees exist, including gradient methods, interior-point methods and subgradient methods. Duality theory and the KKT conditions characterize optimal solutions. Linear programs, quadratic programs, least squares, logistic regression and support vector machines are convex.

Where it is used

Machine learning, signal processing, control systems, finance, network design and resource allocation use convex optimization, with modeling tools such as CVXPY.

Common pitfall

Many practical problems, like deep networks, are not convex, so guarantees do not apply. Recognizing convexity requires checking composition rules. Poor scaling affects solver performance, and numerical tolerances matter. Reformulating a non-convex problem as convex, through relaxations, can give useful bounds but may change the solution.

Where it fits in the course
