Lagrange Multipliers
Optimizing subject to equality constraints.
How it works
The method of Lagrange multipliers finds extrema of a function f subject to equality constraints g equals 0. At a constrained optimum, the gradient of f is parallel to the gradient of g, so grad f equals lambda times grad g for some multiplier lambda. Solving this system together with the constraint gives candidate points. The multiplier has meaning as the sensitivity of the optimal value to relaxing the constraint, and the Lagrangian combines objective and constraints, with KKT conditions extending to inequalities.
Where it is used
Economics utility maximization, physics mechanics, maximum entropy distributions, support vector machine derivations, resource allocation and constrained optimization in machine learning use Lagrange multipliers.
Common pitfall
The method finds stationary points, not necessarily maxima or minima, so classify them. Constraint qualification must hold, or solutions may be missed. The algebra can become complicated with several constraints. Inequality constraints require complementary slackness. Verify candidates by comparing values and checking boundaries.
