Cryptocurrencies
Digital currencies secured by cryptography.
How it works
A cryptocurrency is digital money whose ownership is recorded on a blockchain and secured by cryptography. Users hold a private key that signs transactions and a public address that receives funds, and wallets manage keys. Bitcoin, launched in 2009, has a capped supply of 21 million, Ethereum supports programmable contracts and stablecoins aim to track a currency such as the dollar. Transactions are broadcast, validated by the network and confirmed in blocks, and fees prioritize them. Exchanges convert between currencies and prices are volatile and set by supply and demand.
Where it is used
They are used for payments, remittances, trading, decentralized finance and as stores of value.
Common pitfall
Lost private keys mean lost funds with no recovery, scams, phishing and unregulated exchanges are common and prices swing sharply. Protect keys offline, verify addresses and invest only what you can afford to lose.
