Proof of Work and Proof of Stake

Competing consensus mechanisms for blockchains.

How it works

Consensus mechanisms decide who may add the next block. In proof of work, as in Bitcoin, miners compete to find a nonce that makes a block hash fall below a target, which takes huge computation to find yet little to verify, and the chain with the most accumulated work wins, so rewriting history would need majority computing power. In proof of stake, as in Ethereum since 2022, validators lock up coins as collateral and are chosen to propose and attest to blocks, and cheating can be punished by slashing their stake. Finality rules and fork choice rules resolve disagreements.

Where it is used

They secure public blockchains and set the economics of fees, rewards and energy use.

Common pitfall

Proof of work consumes large amounts of electricity and concentrates in mining pools, while proof of stake can favor large holders and has subtle attacks. Each trades security assumptions, cost and decentralization differently.
