Beginner Topic 15 of 51 Emerging & Frontier Topics
Data Visualization
Communicating data through graphics.
How it works
Data visualization encodes data as visual marks such as position, length, color and area so patterns become visible. Common charts include bar charts for comparisons, line charts for trends, scatter plots for relationships, histograms for distributions, heatmaps for matrices and maps for geography. Perception research shows position and length are read more accurately than angle or area. Good charts have clear titles and labels, honest axes, limited color and a direct message, while interactivity adds filtering and drill-down. Libraries include Matplotlib, D3, Plotly and Vega.
Where it is used
Analysts, journalists and scientists use charts to explore data, present findings and build dashboards for decisions.
Common pitfall
Truncated axes, 3D effects, too many colors and pie charts with many slices mislead, and color choices can exclude color-blind readers. Choose the chart for the question, start axes at zero for bars and test accessibility.
