Recommender Systems

Predicting items users will like.

How it works

Recommender systems predict which items a user will like. Content-based methods match item features to a user's profile, collaborative filtering uses patterns across users, either through similar neighbors or through matrix factorization that learns hidden factors for users and items, and hybrid and deep learning models combine signals such as clicks, ratings and context. Implicit feedback such as views and purchases is more common than explicit ratings. Systems are evaluated with offline metrics such as precision at k and RMSE and with online A/B tests, and they must balance relevance with diversity and novelty.

Where it is used

Streaming services, shops, news feeds and social networks use them to surface products, videos and people.

Common pitfall

Cold start for new users and items, popularity bias, filter bubbles and feedback loops are known problems, and optimizing clicks alone can promote low-quality content. Add exploration, measure long-term satisfaction and give users control.
