Dependency Injection

Supplying a component's dependencies from outside.

How it works

Dependency injection supplies an object's dependencies from the outside, through constructor parameters, setters or interface methods, instead of the object creating them itself. This inverts control, so code depends on abstractions and the wiring happens in one place, called the composition root or an injection container such as Spring, Guice or ASP.NET Core's services. It makes components replaceable and easy to test with fakes.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. A service needs a database.
  2. It does not create one itself.
  3. Instead the dependency is passed in from outside.
  4. In tests a fake is injected.
  5. This loosens coupling and makes code testable.

Where it is used

Web applications, services with repositories and external clients, and any code needing configuration-specific behavior use dependency injection to swap implementations for production, test and local development.

Common pitfall

Overusing containers and reflection hides how objects are wired and delays errors to runtime. Constructors with many parameters signal too many responsibilities. Circular dependencies break creation. Service locators hide dependencies like global state. Prefer constructor injection, keep object graphs shallow and make required dependencies explicit.

Where it fits in the course

Dependency Injection is topic 26 of 50 in Software Engineering, rated Intermediate. It follows Decorator Pattern. The next topic is MVC Architecture.

How to study this topic

  1. Read the explanation above and restate the definition in your own words.
  2. Open the interactive lesson and answer its mini quiz.
  3. Read the common pitfall, then write a short example that avoids it.
  4. Check your understanding in the Software Engineering quiz, and revisit the topic if you miss a question.
