Intermediate Topic 18 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Dependency Management

Controlling external library versions.

How it works

Dependency management controls which external libraries a project uses and which versions. Direct dependencies pull in transitive ones, and a resolver picks versions that satisfy every constraint, using ranges like ^1.4.0 or exact pins. Lockfiles freeze the result, so installs are repeatable, and tools such as Dependabot and Renovate propose updates. Conflicts arise when two libraries need incompatible versions of a third, and some ecosystems allow several versions side by side. Auditing tools flag known vulnerabilities and license problems in the full tree.

Where it is used

Teams use it to keep builds repeatable, patch security issues quickly, limit bloat and meet license obligations.

Common pitfall

Dependencies left unupdated become security debt, while blind upgrades break builds, and abandoned or malicious packages are supply-chain risks. Prefer few well-maintained libraries, update regularly in small steps with tests, and review what each new package pulls in.
