Explainable AI

Methods making model decisions understandable.

How it works

Explainable AI makes the decisions of machine learning models understandable to people. Some models are interpretable by design, such as linear models and small decision trees. For complex models, post-hoc methods approximate explanations: feature importance and permutation importance rank inputs, LIME fits a simple local model around one prediction, SHAP assigns each feature a contribution based on Shapley values, saliency maps and Grad-CAM highlight image regions and counterfactuals show what minimal change would alter the outcome. Explanations are judged by fidelity to the model and usefulness to the audience.

Where it is used

They support debugging, fairness audits, trust in medicine and finance, and regulations that give people a right to meaningful information about automated decisions.

Common pitfall

An explanation can be plausible but not faithful to what the model really does, and can be gamed. Validate explanations, use them as evidence rather than proof and prefer interpretable models in high-stakes uses.

Where it fits in the course

Explainable AI is topic 44 of 51 in Emerging & Frontier Topics, rated Advanced. It follows Multi-Agent Systems. The next topic is AI Safety and Alignment.
