Advanced Topic 43 of 51 Emerging & Frontier Topics

Multi-Agent Systems

Collections of interacting autonomous agents.

How it works

A multi-agent system has several autonomous agents that perceive an environment, decide and act, and interact with each other. Agents may cooperate toward a shared goal, compete or both. Key topics include communication languages and protocols, coordination and task allocation such as the contract net, negotiation and auctions, consensus and voting, planning together and learning in groups with multi-agent reinforcement learning. Architectures can be centralized or fully decentralized, and swarm methods such as ant colony and particle swarm optimization draw on nature. Modern systems also coordinate large language model agents with tools.

Where it is used

Applications include robot teams, traffic control, logistics, smart grids, games, simulations and automated software workflows.

Common pitfall

Emergent behavior is hard to predict and debug, communication costs grow with the number of agents and agents may exploit each other or the rules. Simulate extensively and design clear protocols and limits.
