Express and Middleware
Minimal server framework chaining request handlers.
How it works
Express is a minimal web framework for Node.js that provides routing and a middleware pipeline. A middleware is a function with request, response and next that can inspect or modify the request and response, end the cycle or pass control on. Applications chain middleware for logging, body parsing, authentication, CORS, compression and error handling, then route handlers send the response. Error-handling middleware takes four arguments.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- A request enters the app.
- Middleware functions run in order.
- Each can modify the request or stop it.
- It calls next() to continue.
- The route handler finally sends the response.
Where it is used
REST APIs, server-rendered pages, proxies and prototypes use Express, and similar middleware models appear in Koa, Fastify, Django and ASP.NET.
Common pitfall
Order matters: middleware registered after a route does not run for it. Forgetting to call next or send a response leaves requests hanging. Async errors are not caught automatically in older versions, so use wrappers. Missing security middleware leaves headers and limits unconfigured. Keep handlers thin, centralize error handling and validate input with schemas.
